History:

The subject is a young man with dark hair and chin-length sideburns. The portrait is unfinished and in poor condition. Painting was in the artist's estate at his death. It was acquired by John Trimble and given to the Tennessee Historical Society in 1860. The painting is now held in trust at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville as part of the Tennessee Historical Society Collection.
Notes: William Hickling Prescott (1796-1859) was a scholar and writer of American history despite an accident at Harvard that left him almost totally blind.
