History:

Subject is wearing a dark coat, white vest and shirt with a high collar. He looks fairly young and has light colored hair. There are remnants of the artist's signature in the lower right corner, but parts have been abraded away.
Notes: John S. Claybrook was born in Louisa County, VA March 28, 1808 and came to TN in 1828 and lived with his Uncle, Judge John Overton. He taught at the Hardeman Academy in Williamson County for 12 years and was the President of the Nashville and Decatur Railroad from 1852 until 1868. Claybrook became a large landowner and in Williamson County. He married Mary Perkins April 24, 1834 and they had ten children. See portrait 1.829.
