History:

Painting is an upper torso view with subject turned to his left. There is no apparent artist signature. Portrait was purchased by the Tn Historical Society from the artist in 1859.There is some overpainting indicated, but the portrait is in fair condition.
Notes: William Bowen Campbell (1807-1867) was born at Mansker's Creek in Sumner County. He studied law under his uncle, Governor David Brown of Virginia. He served as States Attorney (1829), member of the Tn Legislature (1835), member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1837-1843), Governor of TN (1851-1853), and was chosen as U.S. Senator from TN (1865). He was the last Whig Governor of TN. He also served in the Seminole War and in the Bloody First Tennessee Infantry in the Mexican War.
