History:	This is a photographic reproduction by George Dury of Record No. 3.599. The surface has been retouched with paint. This is an upper torso view with the subject in a seated position. The subject's left head is resting in his lap while his right arm is resting on a flat surface.
Notes:	Andrew Johnson (1808-75), was trained as a tailor in South Carolina and began practicing his trade in Greeneville, TN in 1826. He served as Mayor of Greeneville (1830-34), State Representative (1835 & 1839), State Senator (1841), U.S. Representative (1843-1853), Governor of Tennessee (1853-57), U.S. Senator (1857-62), and Military Governor of Tennessee (March 1862-March 1865). Johnson was inaugurated as Vice President as a "Union Democrat" on March 4, 1865 and became President upon the assassinatoin of Abraham Lincoln on April 16, 1865. He was impeached by Congress in 1868, but not convicted by a margin of one vote. Finally, Johnson was elected to the U.S. Senate in March, 1875 and served until his death on July 31, 1875.
