History:	At the request of President James K. Polk, this painting of President Madison and that of President Thomas Jefferson were copied by the artist from originals done by Gilbert Stuart. They were presented to the TN Historical Society at Mrs. Polk's death in 1891. This portrait is in poor condition.
Notes:	James Madison (1751-1836) was the fourth President of the United States (1809-1817).
