History:

This portrait is copy of a Gilbert Stuart painting that was painted by the artist at the request of President James K. Polk. At the death of the President's widow, Mrs. Sarah Childress Polk, the portrait was given to the TN Historical Society.
Notes: Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) served as the third President of the United States, serving two terms from 1801 until 1809. He drafted the Declaration of Independence, succeeded Benjamin Franklin as Minister to France, served as Secretary of State under George Washington, and acquired the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon in 1803.
