Notes: Matilda Childress Catron (1802-1872) was one of three daughters born to John and Elizabeth Robertson Childress. They resided at their plantation, Rokeby, near Grand Avenue in present-day downtown Nashville. Matilda and Sarah Childress Polk, the wife of President Polk, were first cousins and close friends. She attended the Belmont Domestic Academy. She married John Catron January 31, 1821. He became the first Chief Justice of TN. He was appointed Justice of the United States Supreme Court, the first Tennessean to hold that position. Tradition says that she asked her husband's friend, Andrew Jackson, for her husband's appointment.
