History:

This portrait was painted from an ink drawing of the subject done in 1810.
Notes: John Haywood (1762-1826) imigrated from North Carolina where he served as Attorney General and Judge of the Superior Court. He moved to Tennessee about 1807. He became Justice of the TN Supreme Court (1816-1826). He was the first President of the TN Antiquarian Society. He authored two books, The Natural and Aboriginal History of Tennessee and The Civil and Political History of Tennessee and is considered the first Tennessee historian.
