History:

This portrait is of a woman wearing a lace cap and a wide lace collar on a dark dress. She has brown hair and eyes and is looking straight at the viewer. An inscription on the back reads "Portrait of Martha Barrow aged 47 by W. B. Cooper AD 1851." However, Cooper states in his account book that he began a portrait of Mrs. Barrow 11 September 1839. The clothing in this portrait s from that period, not the 1850s. The portrait was restored in 1954, but it is considered to be in poor condition.
Notes: Martha (Patsy) Childress was married to Matthew Barrow in 1808 by Judge John Overton.

Categories: Portrait paintings; Women.
