History:

Portrait is an upper torso view with subject facing to his right. The subject is dressed in a Confederate Uniform, his coat unbuttoned. His hands are resting in his lap. The artist's signature is apparent at the bottom right of portrait.
Notes: Johnson was educated at West Point, born in Ohio and raised by Quaker parents in Ohio. He was a teacher but joined the Confederate Army at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a Major General and was present at the battles of Fort Donelson and Chicamauga among others. He is buried at the Nashville City Cemetery.
