History:

This miniature is oval and is in an oval case. It is of a man in a brownish-gray coat, white shirt and dark tie. The subject has light hair and a moustache.
Notes: General Gates P. Thruston (1835-1912), in the U.S. Army resigned in 1865. He married Ida Hamilton the same year. He practiced law, but was also a collector of Indian antiquities. He published Antiquities of Tennessee in 1890 and presented a collection of gems and minerals to Vanderbilt University in 1907. He also left a bequest to the Tennessee Historical Society. He founded the Nashville Museum of Arts.
