History:

This painting has been dated to 1825 and is considered to be in good condition.
Notes: James Winchester, born in Carroll County, Maryland, served with distinction in the American Revolution before settling in Sumner County, Tennessee, in 1785. His public service included: membership in the North Carolina Convention of 1788, captain, colonel, and brigadier-general of the Mero District, and speaker of the Tennessee Senate. He also fought in the War of 1812 as brigadier-general in charge of the Army of the Northwest. After the defeat of his army at the River Raisin, he was imprisoned in Canada for one year. In his retirement he was active in business ventures and with Andrew Jackson and John Overton, founded the city of Memphis, Tennessee. His imposing stone house in Sumner County, Cragfont , is maintained as an historic site of Tennessee.
