History:

Portrait is signed by the artist at the lower left. Old repairs are evident at lower right. There are small holes in the lower right corner and paint drops at the lower right corner. Portrait was given to the State of TN by Rutherford County Friends in 1922.
Notes: John Price Buchanan (1847-1930) was born in Williamson County, TN. He was a succesful farmer and stock raiser. He was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1887 and served until 1891. He was the first President of the Farmer's Alliance (1888), which nominated him as Governor of TN in 1891. He served one term as Governor and then retired to his farm.
