History:

The portrait is entitled Portrait of a Young Girl and Cherub. The subject is about 10 to 12 years of age, with center parted long black curls. She is wearing an off the shoulder blue dress with a gathered bodice and puffed sleeves edged with lace. At her bosom is a white rose and a black cross. In her left hand is a bouquet of flowers. In her right hand is a black book and her hands are crossed over each other. In the background are trees and hills. In the upper left is the figure of a cherub. With his right hand he is parting the clouds and pointing toward the girl. His left hand is pointing upwards toward heaven. This painting appears to be a posthumous memorium.
Notes: The subject is thought to be Agnus Shackelford, daughter of James O. and Sabina Metcalf Shackelford, who died as a young girl. The protrait is thought to have been painted after her death.

Categories: Portrait paintings; Children; Mourning Portraits.
