History:

This is a full length portrait of a young child with center parted curly brown hair, wearing a sheer white dress. The child is seated at the edge of a stream and is holding the edge of the gown in each hand. To the left is a large brimmed straw hat trimmed in blue ribbons and flowers. The child's feet are in the stream. To the right is a pale tan spaniel lapping at the water. There is also a large tree trunk just behind the child. The painting is called Portrait of an Infrant with Dog.
Notes: The subject is thought to be Gertrude Shackelford who is listed as 6 years of age in the 1860 Federal census.
