History:

This portrait was presented to the State by Mrs. Andrew Ewing per a bequest from her late husband. It was accepted by the General Assembly of Tennessee in 1873.
Notes: Henry Clay (1777-1852) ran against James K. Polk for the Presidency in 1844. Tennessee voted for Clay's Whig party against Polk. Clay was originally from Virginia, but moved to Lexington, Kentucky. He represented that state in Congress and the Senate.
