History:

The artist's signature and date of the portrait is apparent on the painting. It was presented to the State by his son, Captain Patrick Henry of Clarksville, TN in February 1906.
Notes: Gustavus Adolphus Henry (1804-1880) was born in Scott County, KY and moved to Christian County, KY in 1818. He was educated at Transylvania University and served in the Kentucky legislature (1831-1835). After moving to Clarksville, TN, he represented Montgomery Co. in the TN state legislature. He served as a Senator from TN in the Congress of the Confederate States. He was a Democrat and considered to be a great orator becoming known as "The Eagle Orator." He ran against Andrew Johnson for governor in 1853 and was a presidential elector in elections from 1840 to 1852.
