History:

This is a torso view, possibly a study for a larger portrait. It is copied from a work by Joseph Stieler. It was listed in fair condition in 1980, however it requires attention. The dust cover is partially attached. There are numerous cracks in the paint layer with several small areas of paint missing. The label on the reverse side is covered with dirt and glue, making it difficult to read. It was painted while Dury was a the court painter to Ludwig I of Bavaria. Dury was asked to leave Bavaria in 1849.
Notes: Prince Adalbert (1828-1875) was the third son and the ninth child of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. The first son was King Maximilian II of Bavaria. The second son was King Otto of Greece. His mother was Queen Therese of Bavaria. Adalbert married Donna Amalia Felipe Pilar of Spain in 1856.

Categories: Portrait paintings;Bavaria; Germany; Greece.
