Notes: James Allen Smith (1850-1920), the son of Burgess Smith came to Knoxville, TN from Atlanta, GA in 1873 and began a successful business career. He married Lillie Powell, daughter of Col. Columbus Powell in 1878. In 1883, he organized and built City Mills, later called J. Allen Smith & Co. which became one of the largest flour mills in the South.
