History:

The subject is seated, with her body at a three quarter turn and her head facing full front. There is very little detail except for the hands and face. The canvas and stretcher are enclosed in a three piece frame of gold painted plaster and wood. Some of the molded plaster has been broken off and is heavily cracked on the outer edges from shrinkage. The artist insisted on painting the portrait in one sitting. The painting technique, alla prima, applies wet paint into wet paint and does not allow for details. This portrait was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts 104th Annual Exhibition in 1909.
Notes: Annie White was born 6 June 1880. She was the daughter of George Simpson White and Lucretia Buford White and died 18 May 1947.

Categories: Portrait paintings; Women.
