History:

The artist, Catherine Wiley (1879-1958) was a Knoxville artist who was greatly influenced by Impressionism. The families of the artist and the subject, were friends. The painting was created while both families were vacationing at their cabins at Elkmont in the Smokey Mountains. The young girl has a pink bow in her brown hair that matches her dress and the background of the painting is a deep blue.
Notes: Catharine Gaut Burton was the daughter of George Pierce Gaut and Catharine Lane Taylor Gaut.
