This is an oval portrait on a rectangular stretcher. The subject is a young woman wearing an aqua dress with a white-lace trimmed neckline over which she is wearing a blacket waist jacket. She is holding a fan and wearing earrings and black gold cross brooch tipped in gold. The artist's signature is located on the reverse of the canvas and on the obverse, lower right corner, just outside the oval. The portrait is considered to be in excellent condition.

Maria Louisa Embry (1830-1866) married Joseph Fowler November 12, 1846. He was from Ohio and was a professor of mathmatics at Franklin College, President of Howard Female Academy in Gallatin, the Comptroller under Military Governor Andrew Johnson and a U.S. Senator from TN during Reconstruction. |
