Description:Frontal waist-length seated portrait of a woman in a black dress with a lace collar and pendant at her neck. A gray shawl is wrapped around her arms. Her brown hair is parted in the middle and pulled back towards the sides. Her left arm rests on the arm of the chair. Plain dark background.
History of Work:Signed: In black paint, on verso: Jas. Hart. Artist lived and worked in Memphis in 1839; thereafter worked periodically in Memphis and throughout the South; lived in Memphis in the mid-late 1850s.
Notes:Sitter resided in Bartlett, TN.

Provenance: Given by a descendant of the sitter. - Gift of Marion Hill Royer, great, great-granddaughter of Nancy Bond
