He wears long sideburns and his hair is dark. His right hand rests on the hilt
of a silver sword. "J. E. 1823" is visible on his belt or waist
sash. The background is a colorful sky.

from life. Sitter was governor of South Carolina.
The "J. E. 1823" may
not be original to the painting; it may have been added at a later date by a
family member.
