Description:Philander P. Claxton is painted in his academic regalia holding his tam (academic cap). His right hand is on the top of the tam and his left hand is at the bottom. The dark gown is most likely black with the colors purple and blue within the hood. There is a hint of gold piping on his gown and a gold tassel on this tam.
History of Work:
Notes:Philander P. Claxton was a former US Commissioner of Education under Woodrow Willson. He was president of Austin Peay Normal School from 1930 to 1946. He worked hard to maintain the state’s educational system during the Depression years.
