| Notes: | Subject was born in Bowdenham, Maine; died in Boston, Massachusetts.
A successful businessman, he made a large donation to Waterville College, Waterville, Maine, during the Civil War, saving the school from bankruptcy. In gratitude, trustees changed the name to Colby College, now one of the top-ranked small schools in the U. S. Gardner Colby married Mary Lowe Roberts on 12 June 1836 in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
