Nearly forgotten
today, Oertel was a prominent painter, wood carver, teacher and pastor.
As it states in the notations on each painting, he worked for a time at
Sewanee and at the Columbia Female Institute. Google has issued a
digitized version of his biography, A Vision Realized, written by
his son, J. F. Oertel. A PDF copy of that work can be accessed by
clicking here.
Almost all of these paintings are in very poor condition, and it is
hoped this is one way to preserve the existence of these
paintings--technically not portraits--in 2008.
