| Description: | Subject is a young African-American woman seated, facing three-quarter left, at a table that holds an empty bowl, spoon, and glass. Her left arm is extended to rest on the table, and her right elbow also rests on the table with her hand coming up to clasp her right neck. There is a drape behind her, and the chair appears to be framed in wood. She is wearing a white dress, and is looking to the viewer's right with a half-smile on her face. The family always said that Jenny May had just finished a bowl of strawberries and cream. |
| History of Work: | Miss Susan Bransford Joy, an artist, was a friend of Ella S. Hergesheimer. Signed "E. Hergesheimer"
|
| Notes: | The portrait was inherited by the current owner's husband (now deceased) from his aunt, Susan Bransford Joy (1903-1960).
