Description:Three quarter portrait of Cornelius Vanderbilt standing with cane in right hand next to table on which is laid his top had over a rendering of the Main Building of Vanderbilt University. Dress is black suit with white shirt and white tie. There is a red drape in background.
History of Work:Portrait was a gift from Mr. Vanderbilt to the University on its opening in October 1875. Mr. Vanderbilt died two years later never having visited the campus bearing his name.
Notes:Portrait hangs in the second floor lobby of Kirkland Hall on the campus.
